Separate the look from the construction

A timber-look surface may be made in several different ways. Laminate, vinyl and engineered wood are distinct product categories, even when a photograph shows a similar grain or colour.

Compare the actual product specification, not just the visual effect. The installation method, intended use and maintenance guidance are part of the decision.

Layout changes the room

Plank width, direction and pattern affect the rhythm of a space. Consider the main sightline, the relationship between adjoining rooms and how the layout meets the edges.

A sample board helps with colour, but a simple floor plan helps with arrangement. Thinking about both keeps a striking pattern connected to the shape of the room.

Plan the edges and transitions

Doorways, thresholds, skirting and changes in floor level need a clear plan. The existing subfloor and the requirements of the selected product will influence the preparation.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific flooring and fitting system. Broad claims such as easy-care or water-resistant do not replace the detailed conditions attached to a product.
